Prayer for a Godly Mentor
Devotional Reflection - Monday (10/27/25)
Last weekend was so enjoyable. My husband and I were able to accomplish a lot of important things from our ongoing list and we had some time to relax and enjoy life with our little guy too.
Part of what I read over the weekend in Saturday's reading from 2 Timothy jumped out at me and I wanted to reflect on that today.
To close his second letter to Timothy, Paul writes in chapter 4:1-5:
I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready [a]in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and [b]exhort, with [c]great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But as for you, use self-restraint in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
I found that line amusing: "...wanting to have their ears tickled..." This is from the NASB version.
The NKJV says "because they have itching ears..."
But the message of "accumulating for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires" is one I wanted to highlight.
How often do I look for affirmation and words I want to hear rather than look to be corrected, rebuked, and exhorted to do something differently?
I need to be more aware of what I am consuming, measure it against scripture, and ask the Lord for wisdom.
Even people who mean well might give wrong advice or avoid calling out our own sin in order to keep the peace.
We all need a mentor who will truly challenge us.
This reminds me of a particular mentor I had in my younger days. She was very much like the women in today's reading, actually, and a great biblical example. She pushed me a lot and I appreciate her and her guidance!
Father God, Thank You for giving us Your Holy Word to speak to our hearts and direct our minds. Thank You for the incredible mentors you have put in my life, please bless them abundantly. Help me to recognize when I am seeking out affirmation rather than the truth I need to hear. Please lead me to another godly mentor at this stage in life who can correct and rebuke me when I need it and encourage and support me to be a better wife and mother. Help me one day to be a helpful mentor to someone else.
Please give me wisdom and courage to follow the plan you have for me and use my gifts to spread the Good News of Jesus. Help me to recognize my gifts and speak to my heart to know how to use them.
Thank You for this quiet time we have to share together today and for being here with me always. Please continue to keep my loved ones safe and healthy and please draw those who might wish to harm us closer to You and change their hearts.
In Your Precious Son Jesus' Name, Amen
