Prayer for Discipline

 Devotional Reflection - Wednesday (10/22/25)

Today's readings from the Bible in a Year website are:

The verses that are speaking to my heart the most today are 2 Timothy 1:5-7.

5 [e]For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelled in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of [f]timidity, but of power and love and [g]discipline.

I hope to have a strong faith to model and pass on to my son and my other children if we are blessed with more. I hope to release any timidity I have in my spirit and live in strength instead!

Discipline, to me, means doing the things you need to do even when you don't want to, and even when they don't come easy to you in the moment. Sometimes I am hungry to read the Word and sometimes there are a list of other things I would rather do in the moment, but as soon as I start reading, I feel blessed with joy in my spirit and I am so grateful.

In an interview or podcast with Andrew Huberman, he spoke about a part of the brain that grows when you stretch to do things you don't want to do and it is called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC).

This brain area is involved in perseverance, self-control, and overcoming challenges, and I would like to strengthen mine!

It's funny, he mentions in the talk that the aMCC is not activated when you trick yourself into doing something you don't like, or when you learn to enjoy something you didn't before, it's strictly for doing the thing you don't actually want to do! I find that so fascinating! **

I want to try to recognize when my brain is telling me I don't want to do something (beneficial) and to do that very thing instead of any other thing I'd rather do.

Father God, Thank You for your Holy Word which I can use to hear Your Will for my life. Please give me wisdom to understand these words and let them rest in my heart and fuel my spirit. Help me to have the sincere faith like Timothy, Lois, and Eunice. Please help me to kindle the gift You have given me, help me to recognize what gift you've given me and to use it wisely. Please help me to have a spirit of power, love, and discipline. Help me to grow to be more disciplined and continue to take the steps I need to take each day, especially when they are difficult or when I would rather do something else. I ask these things in your Son Jesus' Precious Name, Amen.
